HP-12C story

One thing we did at the computer store in West L.A. circa 1983 to 1986 - customers would often ask "How come the 12C costs so much, even though it's a nice calculator?" And we would pull our own personal 12C out of our pocket and toss it across the room, trying hard not to hit the wall in case we would knock a chip out of the wall. That impressed the customers. I've often wondered if they thought we had a "special" unit for that purpose. Probably not (that they would think that). The horizontal format was a wise decision by HP, since the target user would most often lay it on the desk in front of them and use it like any other desk device. I had my doubts about the button cells when we first got the 12C, but that also proved to be a good decision, since the battery life was very good if you weren't doing a lot of heavy programming, and the batteries were profitable to sell. All of the 12C's had the gold color those first (?) years, then came the platinum edition. Currently on Amazon UK, there is a gold model for around 50 pounds, a platinum model for 60 pounds, and a model listed as "HP HP 12C platinum" for 93 pounds and change. I have not been able to ascertain the "HP HP" significance or the High Price (heh).
