To the list:
My best thanks to everybody who worked on making this a successful =
conference.
Here are some random and rambling observations and comments:
-To those who I gave a business card to, everything on it except the =
street address no longer applies. Please use this email =
(danm@sover.net) for communications.
-The tube strike did not affect me in any way, and I appreciate those =
who offered help in case I got stranded. My return trip was quick and =
uneventful, and I even got a seat on the tube next to my luggage for the =
entire ride to the airport.
-For lodging, I can heartily recommend the Baden-Powell House which =
adjoins the Southwest corner of the Imperial College "superblock." Yes, =
its rate was almost 2x IC's Linstead Hall rate, but the facilities were =
more than 2x better, and it's a place I would feel comfortable bringing =
my family to.
-I could not locate the HP-65 at the science museum, and regret that I =
was unable to visit the museum with "the group." I did take a quick =
look at the place myself. It's a great museum, and I was happy to see =
credit given for the New England (USA) application of mass production =
techniques to firearms manufacture which were brought to England (the =
"American Method"). Also impressive was the acknowledgement that even =
though these same techniques were developed much earlier in England (for =
manufacture of pulley blocks for the fleet), the English at the time =
never drew the mental conclusion that they would be good for anything =
other than making pulley blocks. There are some small yet intriguing =
museums around here (Connecticut River Valley, New England, USA) about =
the pivotal role the area played in the development of precision machine =
tools and mass production methods.
-I would have liked more time to hang out and chat with people during =
the conference, especially those who could only be there on Saturday.
-I feel fortunate for not being ever locked in or locked out of the =
building, although I had to work diligently at it and pay attention at =
all times.
-It was very good to have Tony Duell there to provide some very =
interesting hardware insights. It would have been nice if he could have =
explained to the HP people about his HP-IL system which was set up on =
the front table, for I believe that they do not have a clue about what =
it is and what its capabilities are.
-My impression of the HP's presentation at the conference was (maybe =
this is when I was sleeping??): RPN will be back, HP group's marketing =
plan will kick in sometime in October-November 2002, look for some new =
HP calculator numbers, HP will have some scheme they hope will generate =
hype and shelf space in major retailers......... I would like to review =
Jake's video for details of the slides that were "blown past" after the =
talking took up all of the time. I do not envy HP-Fred the job that he =
now has.
-My hope is that all of us will work to become more open-minded about =
things in the handheld computing world as well as things in the world =
beyond handheld computing. There's no sense in getting locked into one =
little part of a world, as we ALL should keep on reminding ourselves.
More thoughts later, perhaps!
Kind regards, and thanks again:
Dan McDonald
