Trying to compile 0.77, 0.78 and 0.79 under Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)

I've found it easier to just update scons and not use scons-local. I
think I had to make a few minor SConscript changes. This was for 9.04
and OS/X 10.6.2.
