Reversed (black-for-white) page images

I'm getting reversed page images out of tumble 0.33--black pixels are
showing up in the PDF as white, and vice versa. Input is one-bit-deep TIF
images, one per file, and I"m not using a control file.

I'm seeing the following warning messages on each page:

1.tif: Warning, TIFF directory is missing required "StripByteCounts" field,
calculating from
imagelength.

processed 1 pages of input file "1.tif"

I don't know the control file format. I took a quick look at the scanner
tokens, and didn't see anything that might be relevant.
